Strengthening Data-Driven Public Health: Empowering the Next Generation of Epidemiologists!

We recently concluded an intensive 5-day (11th May to 15th May, 2026), 4th Contact Session for the Intermediate Field Epidemiology Training Programme (IFETP) at the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health (AIIHPH),Kolkata focusing on data analysis. The comprehensive workshop guided participating officers through the entire data workflow, beginning with an introduction to data types, statistical tests, and data cleaning before diving deep into hands-on software applications. Officers mastered descriptive epidemiology-specifically time and person analysis-using the Jamovi interface, and gained vital geospatial skills for place analysis using QGIS. The true highlight of the session was watching the officers transition from guided software demonstrations to analysing their own actual epidemiological study data. By the end of the contact session, they were independently cleaning data and rapidly generating effective spot maps, choropleth maps, and epidemic curves. This efficient analysis was made possible by the newly developed Jamovi and QGIS modules built by our team to streamline public health workflows.
